The core of this master is dialect study: Arabic Dialectology is a compulsory 24 ECTS module, joined by Arabic Sociolinguistics at 15 ECTS and General Linguistics at 7 ECTS. Elective groups let students specialise in Afro-Asiatic languages, in diachrony, typology and contact, or in the regional specialisation of Arabic dialects, which has four dialect levels from basic to medium. A Master's Thesis Preparation module of 8 ECTS leads into the thesis.
The Master of Arts lasts 4 semesters and 120 ECTS in Vienna, and the programme is multilingual, using English and Arabic. Entry calls for B2 or above in both Arabic and English plus a motivation letter written in English, and a committee fills the 35 places. Selection happens a single time per academic year; for the summer semester 2027, the admission window is 11 January to 31 March 2027.
